How to Get Rid of Dark Circles Under Eyes

How to Get Rid of Dark Circles Under Eyes

For many of us plagued by miserable dark circles under eyes, we are forever searching for a magic cure to look healthy and rested. Alas, with all of the advances in skin care and dermatology it seems no one has unraveled the mystery of how to get rid of dark circles under eyes once and for all. Until the breakthrough comes, we must settle for the best way to hide dark eye circles, a task easier said than done.

Let’s review what causes dark circles under the eyes:

  • Iron Deficiency
  • Lack of sleep or too much sleep
  • Allergies
  • Gluten intolerance
  • Allergies
  • Atopic dermatitis (eczema)
  • Contact dermatitis
  • Hay fever (allergic rhinitis)
  • Heredity
  • Pigmentation irregularities, common for people of African or Asian ancestry
  • Rubbing or scratching your eyes
  • Sun damage- sun exposure, triggers your body to produce more melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour
  • Thinning skin and loss of collagen that comes with aging, can make the blood vessels under your eyes more obvious

How to Fix Dark Undereye Circles

Sadly, the most common cause of dark circles under eyes is heredity. Dark circles from bone structure and thin skin are unfortunately just something many of us are born with.  No amount of sleep and vitamins will make them disappear. There are however, some lifestyle and dietary changes that you can make to improve the appearance of dark circles as well as some effective dark circle remedies:

  • Supplements: vitamin K and iron found leafy greens, Niacinamide (a form of vitamin B) increases blood flow and has anti-inflammatory as well as antioxidant benefits
  • Eye Creams: look for dark circle eye cream with vitamin K in the ingredients
  • Sun protection: invest in a good pair of sunglasses that are labeled 100% UV protection & never leave the house without a protective sunscreen for sensitive skin like, ScarScreen.
  • Hydration: drinking enough water can do wonders for improving dark circles around eyes. Cut back on alcohol, caffeine and salt. Alcohol and caffeine cause dehydration, making dark circles more obvious. Salt can cause you to retain excess body fluid, causing puffy skin and under-eye bags.
  • Cut the processed food from your diet: processed sugar even in small amounts can cause dark circles, dehydrate skin and can accelerate the aging process.
  • Hemorrhoid creams: temporarily shrink the vessels around the eye to minimize the dark under eye circle; a pro makeup artist and modeling trick used before photo shoots.
  • Natural remedies for dark circles: tea bags and cucumbers compress can temporarily minimize dark eye circles

Undereye Concealers

While these suggestions will certainly help minimize dark under eyes, many still ask us how to get RID of dark circles under eyes? The best way to conceal dark undereye circles is with makeup for dark circles, specifically a good dark circle concealer. We set out to evaluate the best concealer for dark circles and what we found was disappointing. Many of the concealers for dark circles were simply not pigmented enough to fully block the discolouration. The undereye concealers that did provide sufficient coverage were too thick, waxy and settled in the creases under the eyes. None of the concealers stayed in place all day and they certainly weren’t waterproof- a must have for gym makeup or those who live in hot humid places.

So, we developed our own! Dermaflage Founder Jocelyn Atkinson has struggled with super dark undereye circles her entire life and was determined to create an undereye concealer for dark circles that would really work. So many concealers would look good leaving the house, only to be completely gone by lunchtime. Behind the Scenes is our concealment collection which includes both a dark circle corrector and dark circle concealer.  Our concealer is very pigmented for full coverage of the most extreme discolouration and light-weight and smudge-proof. Its unique formula dries to a nice matte finish (no tackiness!) and doesn’t move- no setting powder or spray needed for it to last all day!

Finally, the best concealer for dark circles is here- try some out and #liveconfidently!
